PENFIELD – Work to rehabilitate two bridges on Route 255 in Huston Township will re-start this week. When work is complete, PennDOT will remove the bridges from Clearfield County’s structurally deficient list. The repairs will also allow area drivers to enjoy safer travel on bridges that will remain in service for many years to come.
This week, motorists will encounter a daylight alternating traffic pattern controlled by flaggers in the roadway. Later this week, temporary traffic signals will be on flash mode and then be in full operation the week of March 24. Traffic will be restricted to the southbound lanes so that repair work on the northbound lanes of the bridges can take place. Repairs to the southbound lanes were made in 2013.
The first bridge is 45-feet long, spanning Bennett Branch about two miles southwest of Penfield. The second bridge is 15-feet long, spanning Heath Run about three miles southwest of Penfield. Both bridges were built in 1930 and carry more than 6,000 vehicles each day.
These bridges are the first two of five Clearfield County bridges on a $1.8 million rehabilitation contract with Swank Construction Company of New Kensington. Overall work includes substructure and superstructure repairs, new guide rail, and paving. All work is weather and schedule dependent.
Work on the Route 255 bridges is expected to last through May. Work on the other three bridges in southern Clearfield County will begin later this year. PennDOT will issue an update on that work before it begins.
Drivers are reminded to use caution through all construction zones, obey posted speed limits, and always buckle up.
