Elizabeth (Bess) Margaret McGinnis, 100, died Friday, March 14, 2014 at the DuBois Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 30, 1913 in Brockway, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Mary “Mazie” (Martin) McGinnis.
She graduated from Brockway High School in 1931. She was the last surviving member of her graduating class.
After high school, she worked in the offices of the Brockway Glass Company until 1943. In the 1940’s, the government asked women to leave their hometowns and go to work in Washington D.C. to help with World War II since so many men were deployed overseas. In 1943, she left Brockway, and went to work for the government in Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Department of Transportation and Highway Department for 30 years until she retired back to DuBois in 1974.
She was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed growing flowers and spending time with her family.
She was a member of the Brockway Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her niece, Melanie McGinnis of Treasure Lake; a nephew, Brad McGinnis of DuBois; a great-nephew, Tyler Fritz of Treasure Lake; and twin great-nephews, Bram McGinnis of State College and Brett McGinnis of New York City, NY.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Jack H. McGinnis and her infant brother, Sidney McGinnis.
There will be no public visitation.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
Burial is in Morningside Cemetery.
