Clarion Students Join ‘Shovel Brigade’ to Assist Community

CLARION – Snow and cold aren’t always described as a winter wonderland. In fact, the snow can be quite a nuisance and extremely hazardous for some members of the Clarion community.

You can enter Clarion University’s Shovel Brigade. Started by the student group Advisory Board for Leadership and Engagement, the Shovel Brigade is a group of college students and younger members of the community who shovel for those who aren’t able to remove their own snow from driveways and sidewalks.

“They don’t get paid, they don’t get applause. They get the satisfaction of knowing that someone in their community needed something and they were able to answer the call,” said Kelly Ryan, assistant director of the Center for Leadership and Involvement. “At the end of the day, they can say they made someone’s sidewalk a little safer and someone’s life a little easier.”

Trips for the Shovel Brigade are on a call-to-call basis and are organized by ABLE, not Clarion Borough.

Community members, organizations or businesses that need assistance with snow shoveling or other projects can visit www.clarion.edu/localhelp or contact Ryan at 814-393-1688.
