MEN’S SWIMMING

GROVE CITY — Penn State Altoona sophomore Alex Fisher (Clearfield) won three individual events to earn the Men’s High Points Award at the eighth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships in Grove City’s James E. Longnecker Competition Pool last week.

Fisher totaled 27 points for victories in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.54) Thursday, the 100 breaststroke (58.69) Friday and the 200 breaststroke (2:11.71) Saturday.

His 100 time is a new personal record, while he posted season-bests in the other two races.

Fisher, who received his special honor during the championship ceremony following Saturday’s session, also was a member of two winning relay teams for the Lions.

The all-sophomore foursome of Fisher, Benjamin Porter, Keenan Halpin and Kyle Huber turned in a 1:27.77 for the 200 freestyle on the first day and a 1:36.66 for the 200 medley on the second day. Fisher had a 21.77-second third split in the freestyle event and a 25.21 breast leg in the medley race.

That quartet also teamed up for a second place in the 400 medley race Friday. Their time was 3:38.13 with Fisher swimming the breaststroke leg in 54.34.

Jay Wareham replaced Halpin in the 400 freestyle relay Saturday, and the Lions claimed another second in 3:14.61. Fisher’s 47.50 anchor leg was the second fastest split in the race.

Counting the 16 points he accumulated in the relays, Fisher wound up with a total of 43.

He accounted for more than one-fifth of Penn State Altoona’s program-record 207 that were good for second place behind Penn State Behrend, which kept its undefeated streak of AMCC titles intact with 267 points.

The four-team AMCC Championships are combined with the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships in the annual James E. Longnecker Invitational.

Penn State Altoona placed sixth overall among the nine teams with 239 points. PAC champ Grove City bested Westminster 773-718 for the invitational title.
