WJAC-TV: Bomb Scare at UK Naval Base Declared False Alarm

LONDON (AP) – Police say a package that sparked a security incident at the Royal Navy warfare school in southern England did not pose a threat.

The Ministry of Defense earlier said it was dealing with a security incident at HMS Collingwood. Hampshire Police said officers were summoned Monday after reports of a package being discovered.

It said the package had been examined “and it is not deemed suspicious.” Britain’s military bases are on alert after letter bombs were sent to seven army recruiting centers last week.

Police say a Northern Ireland media outlet received a claim of responsibility on behalf of “the IRA.” Most IRA members renounced violence in 2005, but breakaway factions still seek to undermine Northern Ireland’s peace settlement. They have not detonated any bombs in England since 2001.
