PHILIPSBURG – A monster second half for the Clearfield boys basketball team helped the Bison break a three game losing streak with a 63-25 trouncing of the Mounties of Philipsburg-Osceola on Wednesday night.
Leading at the half on the Mounties’ home court, Clearfield outscored Philipsburg-Osceola 41-11 in the final 16 minutes to improve to 6-15 on the season. The Mounties drop to 0-19.
On Senior Night for Philipsburg-Osceola, the Mounties came out in the first eight minutes on a high of emotions and energy to take a 9-8 lead after the first quarter.
Then, the energy and high emotions for the Mounties was gone, as Clearfield went in front, 11-9, early in the second quarter on a three pointer by freshman Will Myers. It was one of four treys on the evening for Myers who finished with a game and career high 22 points.
The third quarter started with Clearfield going on a 9-0 run and the fourth frame began with the Bison on a 15-0 run.
With Clearfield starting the second half leading 22-14, the Mounties were called for back-to-back technical fouls with no time coming off the clock.
Myers went to the free throw line to shoot the technical fouls for the Bison and calmly hit four straight free throws, that basically took Philipsburg-Osceola out of the game.
Clearfield outscored the Mounties in the third quarter 17-5, and 24-6 in the final eight minutes.
Philipsburg-Osceola was led by Curtis Matsko with six points.
The three seniors honored for the Mounties on Senior Night were Matsko, Collin Maurer and Dan Fowler.
Clearfield was 16 of 31 from the charity stripe while the Mounties went 9 of 15.
There was no junior varsity game.
The Bison close out the regular season on the road at Curwensville (13-8) on Friday night with a battle with the Golden Tide. JV action starts at 6 pm and the varsity will immediately follow.
Curwensville won the first meeting of the rival schools on December 9 at Clearfield, 56-38.

Philipsburg-Osceola will entertain West Branch (14-7) on Friday night. Since there is no junior varsity game the varsity contest will tip-off at 7 pm.
