SPRING MILLS — A one-point third quarter spelled doom for the Clearfield Area High School girls basketball team Friday night as Penns Valley rallied from a 16-11 halftime deficit to triumph 35-24 and sweep the season series.
“We played hard and we played well, and they’re a good Mountain League team,” Lady Bison coach Joey Castagnolo said. “We held their two leading scorers (Karli Ripka and Kourtney Beamesderfer) to six points.”
He pinpointed the loss of Briana Spencer, the lone Lady Bison senior, because of an injury as a key factor in the crucial third period.
“We had a rough time adjusting to not having her on the floor,“ Castagnolo said.
Maggie Sopic was high for Clearfield (3-16, 1-11 ML) with six points.
Penns Valley (13-6, 9-3 ML) was led by Tangie Lyons’ 10 points.
The Lady Bison jayvees were nipped 28-27 on a Lady Ram basket with six seconds left. Tessa Waring had seven points in the defeat.
Clearfield will bring down the curtain on the season with three home games next week, Monday against Curwensville, Tuesday against Philipsburg-Osceola and Friday against Bald Eagle Area.
