Punxsutawney Wrestlers Thump Curwensville, 64-9

CURWENSVILLE – In what has been a very tough, difficult season for the Curwensville Area High School wrestling squad, things didn’t get any easier on Thursday night, as visiting Punxsutawney overwhelmed a depleted Golden Tide  64-9.

Curwensville won just two bouts on the night, a forfeit for Jeff Harvey at 113 pounds and a Ben Junod decision at 195.

Junod, a sophomore, had a takedown in each period to defeat Alex Young of Punxsutawney 6-1 in the only match the Tide won on the mat at Patton Hall.

The win for Junod was his eighth of the season.

At 145 pounds, Jake Lancaster of the Golden Tide lost a tough 8-6 overtime match to Josh Shuckers of the Chucks.  Shuckers had a 5-4 advantage going into the third period before Lancaster picked up a reversal to go out in front 6-5.  Moments after the reversal by Lancaster, Shuckers escaped to send the bout into the extra session at 6-6.  A quick takedown in the first overtime period gave the win to the Punxsutawney grappler.

The Tide’s Hunter Lancaster lost 10-8 at 152 in the evening’s other interesting bout.

Lancaster took an 8-5 lead going into the final period but Jeff Bottenhorn of the Chucks scored five unanswered points in the third period with a reversal and a three point near fall to gain the win.

Unbeaten sophomore Kaleb Young went to 21-0 on the year with a fall at 138 pounds over the Tide‘s Logan Charles, also a sophomore.

Curwensville Head Coach Duane Wriglesworth, commented afterwards, saying, “We just did not match up well with Punxsutawney, who put several quality kids out there. I was very pleasd for Ben (Junod) who picked up our only win, and the Lancaster boys (Jake and Hunter) also, like Ben, fought hard and lost close bouts.”

The junior high bout was won by Curwensville, beating the young Chucks, 52-30, in the evening’s first match.

The Golden Tide (0-12) wrestle Moshannon Valley Friday evening on the Black Knights home wrestling surface.  Junior high activity starts at 6 pm.
