TYRONE — Standout Brandon Gripp poured in 39 points and was joined in double figures by three teammates as Mountain League pace-setter Tyrone finished strong to defeat Clearfield 74-47 in a schoolboy basketball make-up game Thursday night.
“The score was not indicative of the game we played,“ Clearfield coach Forrest Campman said. “We were down five with about three minutes to go in the third quarter and just ran out of gas.”
Clearfield (4-16, 4-8 ML) was missing two senior starters with Boston College football recruit Christian Lezzer in Arlington, Texas, to play for the U.S. Under-19 National Team against Team Canada in the International Bowl Friday night and Jon Janocko sidelined by an injury.
Wyatt Westen, another senior, came through with a career-high 15 points, five more than his previous best, while junior Erik Sellers and freshman Will Myers scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Sellers had two of the Bison’s five treys. Westen, Myers and Seth Ford also hit from long range.
Campman noted that the Bison had to contend with a “great player” in Gripp, who scored 12 points in the second quarter and 13 in the third period.
The senior guard made four three-pointers and was nine-for-nine at the foul line in surpassing his 24.8-point average.
The Golden Eagles (16-3, 10-2 ML) got 12 points from Jordan Miller and 10 from Anthony Politza and Dalton McKeehen.
In the junior varsity game, Clearfield challenged Tyrone’s 32-game winning streak but fell short of ending it, losing 46-39. The Bison were led by Evan Brown with 15 points and Cody Spaid with 11.
Penns Valley will be Clearfield’s Senior Night opponent Friday in the new CAHS gym.
