Obituary Notice: Darrel E. Barto

Darrel E. Barto, 96, of Mentor, Ohio and formerly of Westover, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at Lakewest Hospital.

Mr. Barto was born May 8, 1917 in Irvona. He worked for PennDOT, the Westover Tannery, TRW and Oster Manufacturing. Mr. Barto lived in Mentor, Ohio for many years before retiring in 1980 to Westover.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and took many trips out west to hunt and to Canada to fish with family and friends.  He was a lifelong member of the Westover Baptist Church.

Mr. Barto served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received a Bronze Star for action at the Remagen Bridge over the Rhine River in Germany.

He’s survived by his daughter, Donna (Eric) Van Boxel of Mentor, Ohio; his daughter-in-law, Incha Barto of Ashtabula, Ohio; his grandchildren, Sarah Van Boxel of Mentor, Ohio; Adam (Mary Beth) Van Boxel of Chardon, Ohio; and Daniel (Jenn) Van Boxel of Millersville, MD; his great-grandson, Alexander Ward Van Boxel of Chardon, Ohio; his sisters, Lois Cheverchko of Patton and Shirley Fry of Westover; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Barto and Bess (Kitchen) Barto; his beloved wife, Alice (Fronk) Barto; his beloved companion of many years, Kate Fronk; his sons, Eugene Barto and Dana Barto, his sisters, Margaret Roland and Doris Gearhart; his brother, Bob Barto; and granddaughter, Rachel Van Boxel.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday at the Lloyd-Dimmick Funeral Home Inc., 91 Rose St. Irvona.  A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m.

Burial will follow in the Westover Cemetery.
