PENFIELD – The following programs have been scheduled for the month of February at the Parker Dam State Park.
Saturday, Feb. 8
Learn to Cross-country Ski
10 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
(Note: There is a $3 fee for all participants of this program)
You can learn how to enjoy this healthy winter sport with the whole family. Come learn why the cross-country skis work the way that they do, how to get strapped onto the proper-sized equipment, and then head outside to practice turns, falling down, how to get back up, and various helpful techniques to get you started. We can provide equipment (limited-number and sizes) to both adults and children. Please dress appropriately for being active outdoors in the winter.
Primitive Fire
2 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
If you found yourself without matches and needing a fire to survive, could you do it? Come learn several techniques that could someday help you out of a dire situation. We will be stepping outside to practice a little, so please dress appropriately.
Saturday, Feb. 15
Learn to Ice Skate
10 a.m. – Beach House
It’s one of the most fun things to do outside in the cold weather. If you’re not sure how, or it’s been a while, learn the basics of getting around on the ice and being more confident on skates. For anyone who doesn’t have their own skates, we have a large variety of equipment that you may borrow.

Sunday, Feb. 16
Backyard Birding:
11 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
Whether you already have a feeder and watch the birds that visit, or would like to learn just what you need to try, come discover a world of wildlife in your backyard.

Ice Fishing Basics:
2 p.m. – Beach House
You will learn how to be comfortable and safe while ice fishing on a frozen lake or pond. We have a variety of equipment examples for you to look at and some rods for you to practice your technique. If you’re 16 or over, bring your 2014 PA fishing license. Also, dress appropriately for the weather, including boots to keep your feet dry.
Special Note for Sledding and Ice Skating at Parker Dam: When conditions allow, a sled riding area and an ice skating rink are maintained at the park. Check the “Parker Dam State Park” Facebook page or the “Winter Report” at visitPAparks.com to learn of snow and ice conditions and the availability of facilities.
