Golden Tide Gain Revenge, Beat Glendale 64-53

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Golden Tide boys basketball team gained a measure of revenge Wednesday night in beating the visiting Glendale Vikings, 64-53, in Moshannon Valley League action.

Glendale pulled out a 56-55 overtime victory the first time the two squads met, on January 16, on the Vikings’ home court.

Curwensville Head Coach Shane Pentz talked about the win, “Well, it definitely was a hard fought game by each team. It was just real nice to get the win because we, in the first half, for whatever reason, were definitely lethargic out there. But the kids responded in the second half and to their credit they came out strong.”

Even though Pentz wasn’t pleased with the play of his squad in the first 16 minutes, the Tide trailed by just one at the intermission, 28-27.

In the second half Curwensville found both its defense and its offense.

The Tide limited the Vikings to just nine third quarter points and dumped in 24 tallies in the fourth quarter, both efforts securing the win for Curwensville.

The Tide were sent to the free throw line 12 times in the later parts of the fourth stanza, as Glendale tried to stretch the game for a potential comeback.  Of those 12 attempts the Golden Tide made eight of them.

Brett Gardner of Curwensville led all scorers with 24 points with teammate Trey Rauckhorst chipping in with 12.

For Glendale, Anthony Barnhart had 22 while Shea O’Donnell added 18.

Pentz also talked about his team’s play in the fourth quarter, saying, “Well, that certainly wasn‘t a clinic out there by us on how to finish a game.  We had numerous turnovers and were very sloppy at times.  It definitely is not how to close out a game.  But I was glad to see us get more contributions on offense from some other guys tonight.  That is something we need to have moving forward.”

The victory gives the Golden Tide an 8-6 mark, while the loss drops the Vikings to 4-10 on the 2013-14 season.

The Tide are also in first place in the Moshannon Valley League with a 4-1 record.

Curwensville made it a clean sweep on  the night by winning the junior varsity game, downing the Vikings 41-30.  Jake Terry had double figures, 12, to pace the Tide.

The Tide take to the road on Friday night for its next encounter.  Curwensville will travel to Johnsonburg to play the Rams.  Tip off for the JV contest is at 6 pm and the varsity will immediately follow.
