Falvo Gets Taste of Movie Industry

As a “joke,” Mark Falvo of Clearfield took a chance at being an extra on a movie set in Pittsburgh. First, he was chosen as a reporter and a bar patron in “Jack Reacher,” which starred Tom Cruise and Robert Duvall.

Later this month on “Those Who Kill” on A&E, Falvo’s familiar face will be in the background as a correctional officer. Then, in “House of Cards,” he may be seen as both a reporter and a press photographer.

Man Flown to Altoona after Three-vehicle Accident in Bradford Twp.

BRADFORD TOWNSHIP – A 30-year-old Philipsburg man, Joshua G. Burley, was flown to Altoona with severe injuries after a three-vehicle accident Monday on U.S. Route 322 in Bradford Township, reported the state police at Clearfield.

Burley was traveling westbound while Mitchell J. Stephens, 26, and Nichole L. Stiles, 35, both of Clearfield were traveling eastbound. For unknown reasons, the Burley vehicle abruptly swerved into the eastbound lane, state police said.

CASD to Consider Collapsing Professional Positions

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield school board will consider collapsing all professional positions that are represented under the collective bargaining agreement with the Clearfield Education Association at the conclusion of this school year during next week’s regular meeting.

The district will consider collapsing the positions in preparation for the upcoming school building consolidation. The district has embarked upon a $36 million expansion and renovation of the Clearfield Area High School and a $10.6 million expansion and renovation of the Clearfield Elementary School.

CAUW Needs “Just a Little More”

JUST A LITTLE MORE – Hank Wilson and his daughter, Haley of Clearfield point out that the Clearfield Area United Way (CAUW) needs just a little more to reach its annual campaign goal.

Officer Phil Program to Present at St. Francis

CLEARFIELD – The Officer Phil Program will present its programs to the St. Francis School on Jan. 28.

With the involvement of Clearfield Police Department, the Officer Phil Program will focus on some important topics.  Since the program will be geared to the elementary students, the lessons will be taught in a fun, energized way.    One of Officer Phil’s Pals, Lucky Duck, will be there to help teach the important safety lessons.

WJAC-TV: Shooting Reported at Purdue University

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A shooting has been reported on the campus of Purdue University, according to information posted on the school’s Twitter page and university Web site.

The university posted at about 12 p.m. Tuesday about the shooting that happened in an electrical engineering building on campus. The school updated about 30 minutes later, saying that one person was reportedly in custody, and police were continuing to search the scene.

CASD to Consider Change Orders for CES, CAHS Projects

CLEARFIELD – Next week, the Clearfield school board will consider a change order with Pinnacle Plumbing and Heating for HVAC work at the Clearfield Elementary School. If approved, the change order would result in an additional cost of $80,515.60 to the CES expansion and renovation.

The district has embarked upon a $10.6 million expansion and renovation at the CES. The district has also voted to permanently close the Clearfield Area Middle School and the Girard-Goshen, Bradford Township and Centre Elementary Schools and to convert the CES into a K-6 campus.

LT Residents Protest Appointment of Two Roadmasters

CLEARFIELD – The Lawrence Township Supervisors faced several residents at last night’s meeting asking that their decision to appoint two roadmasters be rescinded.

At the Jan. 6 re-organizational meeting, Supervisors Edward Brown and Daniel Mitchell Sr. were elected as roadmasters. Supervisor William Lawhead held that position previously.

HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett has offered a preview of his 2014-15 budget proposal with an announcement that he plans to increase funding for rape crisis services and domestic violence programs.

WJAC-TV: PA Court Denies Sandusky Attorney’s Appeal

BELLEFONTE – The top court in Pennsylvania has denied a request for a hearing to be held on behalf of one of Jerry Sandusky’s defense attorneys regarding potential information leaks to the media regarding the Sandusky child sex abuse trial.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejected the hearing for an appeal filed last year by Attorney Karl Rominger. He was ordered to reveal whether he shared with the media any Sandusky-related documents produced by prosecutors in the case.

WJAC-TV: “No Evidence” of Shooting at University of Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. – A reported shooting on the University of Oklahoma’s main campus could have been a false alarm, according to authorities.

The university’s official Twitter site posted about a shooting incident at Gould Hall just before 12:30 p.m., or 11:30 a.m. local time. The university advised students to shelter in place.

CASD to Consider Tax Resolution

CLEARFIELD – Next week, the Clearfield school board will consider a 2014-15 tax index resolution, stating it will not raise taxes more than its calculated index.

The Pennsylvania legislature passed the Taxpayer Relief Act on June 27, 2006. It requires school districts to limit tax increases to the level set by an inflation index unless the tax increase is approved by voters in a referendum or the school district obtains from the state Department of Education or a Court of Common Pleas certain referendum exceptions.

CRC Receives $5,000 Contribution

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Revitalization Corp. (CRC) has received a contribution from the Clearfield Bank & Trust Co. in the amount of $5,000 for 2014.

This contribution is a part of the bank’s ongoing pledge to the CRC since the organization’s formation in 2008. The CB&T has been vital to the sustainability of the CRC Main Street Program.

Morrisdale Man to Stand Trial for Terroristic Threats, Simple Assault

CLEARFIELD – All charges were held to court against a Morrisdale man accused of assaulting and threatening his daughter after a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge James Hawkins during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.

Kevin Michael Hengst, 50, of Morrisdale has been charged with terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment. His bail was modified from $50,000 to $25,000 monetary at the preliminary hearing.

LT Moving Ahead with Phase III Sewage Project

CLEARFIELD – At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Lawrence Township Supervisors approved a resolution to proceed with a loan from Clearfield Bank & Trust to fund the approved Phase III sewage upgrades.

Solicitor James Naddeo presented the resolution and related documents in the process that he said is similar to the process for a PennVEST loan, including advertising, document preparations and presentation to Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

Goodman to Compete for PA Fair Queen Title

CLEARFIELD – On July 29, 2013, Taylor Rae Goodman of Curwensville was crowned as the 25th Clearfield County Fair Queen.

Since then, Goodman has been raising money for charity, participating in community events and starting college. The next chapter of her journey as fair queen begins today, as she competes for the title of Pennsylvania State Fair Queen in Hershey at the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF) Convention.

MADERA – The state police at Clearfield have initiated an investigation into a robbery that occurred just after 11 a.m. Thursday at the CNB Bank on Main Street in Madera.

Corbett and Scarnati Announce $3.9M in SRO and SPO Grants

HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett and Sen. Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson) have announced that $3.9 million has been awarded to 81 schools and municipalities for the placement of school resource officers and school police officers in schools across Pennsylvania.

Woman Pleads Guilty to Stealing More than $44K from Employer

CLEARFIELD – A Brockway woman who took more than $44,000 from her employer pleaded guilty during colloquy court in Clearfield County.

Melissa Ann Rummel, 35, 416 Broad St., Brockway, pleaded guilty to theft by deception and 27 counts of access device fraud. She was sentenced to 90 days to one year in jail and three years consecutive probation.

Point-in-Time Count to Take Place on Jan. 29

CLEARFIELD – On Jan. 29, there will be a sheltered and an unsheltered Point-in-Time (PIT) Count conducted across the state of Pennsylvania.

All homeless dedicated Emergency Shelter, Transitional Housing and Permanent Supportive Housing programs are required to participate in the sheltered count.

CIU No. 10 Joins Pearson VUE Network to Offer Certification Testing

WEST DECATUR –The Central Intermediate Unit No. 10 has signed an agreement with Pearson VUE, the computer-based testing (CBT) business of Pearson, to test candidates pursuing their GED.

Pearson VUE believes testing and certification is at the heart of the learning experience. CIU No. 10 will play its part by offering accessible and secure testing to candidates.

Hearing Continued in Indecent Assault Case

CLEARFIELD – A preliminary hearing was continued for a Clearfield man accused of indecent assault by Magisterial District Judge Richard Ireland during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.

John Joel Ralston, 51, of Clearfield has been charged with indecent assault/person less than 13 years of age. The charges stem from an alleged incident that occurred in February or March of 2013 when the victim was visiting Ralston at his camp/residence.

Fines, Fees Increase to Cover Costs of Transportation Bill

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania motorists will help cover the costs related to the state’s transportation plan each time they commit a traffic violation.

Gov. Tom Corbett signed comprehensive transportation legislation into law on Nov. 25, 2013. The legislation will invest $2.3 – $2.4 billion into the state’s roads and bridges by the transportation plan’s fifth year, said the Corbett Administration.
