St. Marys — Down 10-0 after the first two bouts, St. Marys (6-1) turned on the heat in the “Dutch Oven” and rattled off six falls in a row to take over the momentum and a commanding 36-10 lead that they would not relinquish in a key District 9 dual meet Thursday night.
The meet started at 120 where sophomore Josiah McClarren (12-8) got the Bison off to a nice start with a bonus point win 10-0 over Garret Cook (7-8).
Noah Cline kept things rolling for the Bison with a second period fall over David Mertz (5-11). Cline’s 16th win, against six losses tied him for the team lead with Mike Beck.
Events suddenly turned sour for the Bison as the Flying Dutch turned a 10-0 deficit into a 36-10 lead after the middleweights (132-170) were done.
Particularly disheartening to the Bison cause was the third period fall sustained by senior Mike Beck (16-6), who earlier held a first period 7-0 lead over Dutchman Tyler Yetzer (13-4).
Picking up wins in the heavyweights for the Bison were sophomore Travis Ogden (15-8) at 182, who was in trouble early but picked up a first period fall; senior Jake Verchick (15-4) who held on for a 5-3 decision at 220; and sophomore heavyweight Nate Lash (6-5) who pinned his guy in 3:56.
Sophomore Logan Gilbert then upped his record to 12-8 at 113 with a dominating 9-3 win over Cameron Resch (11-6) to close out the night.
The Bison (7-4) head to their final regular season tourney this weekend when they travel to New Oxford. They will be back in dual meet action when they host Tyrone next Thursday.
