Bipartisan Legislation to Address ACA’s Online Security Concerns Advances through House

WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, PA-5, today delivered remarks from the House floor following passage of the Health Exchange Security and Transparency Act (H.R. 3811), which will help safeguard personal information submitted to the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) online exchanges.

Despite the Obama administration’s vocal opposition to the effort to boost transparency and consumer protections, a veto-proof majority of Republicans and Democrats voted, 291-122, to pass H.R. 3811.

Although the Healthcare.gov Web site launch was a severe disappointment, an even greater concern has been expressed regarding the website’s security vulnerabilities – including the security of personal and medical information…Unfortunately, it has become very clear that the rushed implementation of the launch has affected the site’s ability to perform on both accounts…”

“The bill we passed today with bipartisan support, the Health Exchange Security and Transparency Act, would require the Department of Health and Human Services to notify individuals if their personal information has been stolen or unlawfully accessed through an Obamacare exchange…”

“This is a simple, commonsense reform that will go a long way to help stem the fears that Americans have with the online exchanges and the security of their personal information.  The American people deserve as much.”
