Tyrone “Runs” Past Lady Bison 60-41

TYRONE – All it takes at times is just one bad stretch and your odds of winning slip away.

That was pretty much the story Wednesday night in Tyrone as the Lady Eagles defeated visiting Clearfield, 60-41, in a game with a deceiving final score.

The Lady Bison went toe-to toe with Tyrone, now 7-2 on the year, for approximately the first 13 minutes of the game.

A basket by Clearfield’s Maggie Sopic with 2:50 remaining in the first half had the Lady Bison down by just three points, 19-16.

Then came the stretch, actually one of two on the night for the home squad, the bad-variety type stretch, as Tyrone ended the first 16 minutes on an 11-0 run to take a 14 point margin into the intermission, 30-16.

Clearfield came out with even more fight for the second half and didn’t back down.  The Lady Bison outscored Tyrone 14-12 in the third quarter and cut the margin to 42-30 with eight minutes left.

With the score 42-31 early on in the fourth quarter, the host team put up another run that iced the contest.

This run was 12-0 and gave the Lady Eagles a 54-31 bulge before Sopic hit a two pointer.

Although the fourth quarter spurt took away any chance of an upset, Clearfield head coach Joey Castagnolo was upbeat, even in defeat, simply saying, “The score was certainly not indicative of how we played. We did play well and not one time did we ever back down from the physical play. I was proud of our team tonight.”

Sopic paced the Clearfield attack with 16 points while Emily Ryan tallied 12.

The Lady Eagles connected on seven three-pointers, four by Finnley Christine who led all scorers with 18.

Jordyn Swogger added 14 and Kasey Engle chipped in with 11 for the balanced Tyrone offense.

In the junior varsity game Tyrone also picked up the victory, beating Clearfield by a score of 32-25.  Victoria Ireland had eight points for the Lady Bison.

The Lady Bison (2-8) return to action on Friday night with a home contest against Penns Valley.  JV action starts at 6 pm and the varsity will immediately follow.
