Caldwell Gets State Prison in Aggravated Assault Case
CLEARFIELD – A DuBois man accused of breaking into a Glen Richey residence and assaulting an occupant was sentenced to state prison during plea and sentencing court in Clearfield County.
Ned Carmen Caldwell, III, 49, 351 Captain Kidd Rd., 876 Treasure Lake, DuBois, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, criminal trespass, and two counts each of recklessly endangering another person, terroristic threats, stalking, and criminal mischief. He was sentenced by Judge Paul E. Cherry to nine months to two years in state prison. He must pay more than $1,000 in restitution and complete anger management counseling.
Woman Accused of Conspiring to Burn Ex-husband’s Home Gets Re-sentenced
CLEARFIELD – A former Winburne woman who conspired to burn her ex-husband’s home was back in Clearfield County Court.
Deanna Marie Nevel, 32, an inmate of state prison pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy/murder in the first degree and criminal conspiracy/arson in October of last year. At that time, she was sentenced to eight to 20 years in state prison.
Dollar General Burglarized in Irvona
RVONA – The Clearfield-based state police have initiated an investigation into a burglary that occurred at approximately 8:16 p.m. Monday at the Dollar General Store in Irvona.
During the incident, a male suspect entered the store and poked a customer who was checking out with an apparent handgun inside of a bag. The suspect, state police said, ordered the customer to get moving.
County Approves Budget Without Tax Increase
CLEARFIELD – Yesterday, the Clearfield County Commissioners voted, 3-0, to adopt its 2014 budget without any property tax increase.
The county’s property taxes will remain at 18.5 mills, reported Commissioner Joan Robinson-McMillen, chair. The millage rate has been 18.5 for the past four years when the commissioners lowered property taxes by 2.5 mills, added Commissioner Mark B. McCracken.
Hearing Continued in Sexual Assault Case
CLEARFIELD – During Centralized Court on Monday, the preliminary hearing was continued until Jan. 15 for a man accused of furnishing alcohol to a group of boys and engaging in sexual activity with one boy.
Man Pleads Guilty to Breaking into Pharmacy
CLEARFIELD – A DuBois man accused of breaking into an area pharmacy has pleaded guilty in Clearfield County Court.
Justin Brett Smith, 31, 2177 Caribbean Rd., 1547 Treasure Lake, DuBois, an inmate of the jail, pleaded guilty to burglary and criminal mischief. He was sentenced to six months to one year in jail and two years consecutive probation. He was fined $350 plus costs and must pay restitution of more than $19,000.
DuBois City Manager, Solicitor Discuss SPOs at Council Meeting
DUBOIS – At its meeting Monday night, the DuBois City Council heard about the changes to school security within the DuBois Area School District.
Earlier in the day, City Manager John “Herm” Suplizio and Solicitor Toni Cherry attended a hearing in regards to the appointment of school police officers for the DASD. The hearing took place before Clearfield County President Judge Fredric Ammerman.

MORRIS TOWNSHIP – The investigation is continuing into an incident during which a 4-year-old girl was found without any supervision on Wednesday at a Morris Township home, reported the state police at Clearfield.
Classmates Memorialize Friend and Hero through Scholarship
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Area High School Class of 1973 has established a scholarship fund in memory of a “friend, classmate and hero,” Jerry Read, who lost his life in a Navy Yard shooting in September in Washington, D.C.

Teacher’s Legacy Continues through Scholarship
CLEARFIELD – An area teacher’s legacy of education will continue through a scholarship program initiated by her daughter.
While Martha “Marty” Clarke of Clearfield was losing her battle with cancer, her daughter, Rachel, wanted to honor her and decided an annual scholarship would be the best way to do that.
