Nellie A. Mekis, 97, formerly of Osceola Mills, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 at Windy Hill Village.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 .m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Osceola Mills, with the Rev. Father Robert Horgas as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday at the Heath Funeral Home in Osceola Mills. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.
Mrs. Mekis was born Oct. 28, 1916 in Osceola Mills, the daughter of the late Frank and Veronica (Moroz) Yokobosky,. She married George Mekis on June 8, 1940 and resided most of her life in Osceola Mills.
Mrs. Mekis worked for Charles Navaskys & Co. as a serger for many years and retired at the age of 64. After her husband’s death on March 18, 1965 due to a mining accident, she devoted her life to raising her children and grandchildren. At the age of 90, Mrs. Mekis moved to Dayspring Personal Care Home in Forest and remained there for six years. After a lengthy illness, in April of this year, she moved to Windy Hill Village.
She is survived by two sons, George Mekis Jr. and his wife, Carol and John Mekis and his wife, Marianne, both of Osceola Mills; two daughters, Carol Jansen and her husband, Bob of Fenton, MI and Eileen Keller and her husband, Barry of Kylertown; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Mekis and a daughter, Frances “Cookie” Merryman. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Frank and Veronica Yakobosky; three brothers and four sisters, Genevive (Bruno) Dembowski, Tony (Sophie) Yokobosky, Steve (Mary) Yokobosky, Sophie (Joe) Casebolt, Frances (Louie) Quesada, Jean (Martin) Olosky and Joe (Angie) Yokobosky; a brother-in-law, Joe Durish; a mother- and father-in-law, Michael (Anna) Mekis; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Ann (George) Karsnak, Joe (Mary) Mekis, Antonette (Andy) Bezilla, Steve (Betty) Mekis, John (Ann) Mekis and Mary (Joe) Lawskosky.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Dayspring Personal Care Home, Windy Hill Village and Horizons Hospice for the loving care their mother received.
