CLEARFIELD – A man accused of deceptive business practices at an area cemetery waived his right to a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Richard Ireland during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
Edmund A. Grenier Jr., 68, of Reynoldsville has been charged with deceptive business practices, theft by failure to make required disposition of funds and theft by deception. His bail has been set at $50,000 unsecured.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, on Oct. 25, Lawrence Township police received a report about the victim who had purchased a headstone and who hadn’t received it. On June 22, 2012, the victim paid $2,745 to the Crown Crest Cemetery for a headstone. Grenier was supposed to order the headstone and place it on a gravesite at 2122 Washington Ave., Hyde.
Further, the victim paid Grenier the full amount of the headstone on June 22, 2012. He had a contract with Grenier, which specified the total amount due, $2,745, and that the seller will provide the product within 120 days upon receipt of the full amount of the purchase price. As of Nov. 1, the victim hadn’t received the purchased headstone; also, he hadn’t been refunded his total payment.
The victim was 66 years of age at the time of the offense, which makes it a second-degree felony, the affidavit states.
