No Offense, No Win, Lady Chucks Drub Clearfield 66-24

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Clearfield High School girls head coach Joe Castagnolo said before the 2013-14 season started that his team would be challenged offensively at times.  Monday night was one of those times.

The Lady Bison traveled to Punxsutawney to take on the Lady Chucks in District 9 AAA action.

Punxsutawney improved to 3-2 on the year with an easy 66-24 victory.

It started out ugly for Clearfield as the Lady Chucks took a quick 7-0 lead before Bison Brianna Spencer hit a free throw with 4:17 remaining in the first eight minutes.  It was a long time before the Lady Bison would add more to the total of one point.

Punxsutawney then powered away from the visiting Clearfield squad with another run.

This run was 22-0 that stretched from the first quarter deep into the second, giving the hosts a 29-1 lead until Clearfield sophomore Margo Castagnolo hit on a three pointer with 2:08 left in the half.  It was the first field goal on the evening for the Lady Bison.

At the half, it was pretty much over, 32-6 in favor of Punxsutawney.

Clearfield would find some offense in the second 16 minutes, tallying 18 points, as Spencer had three treys to end the night as the leading scorer for the Lady Bison with 10.

Castagnolo said afterwards, “Tonight, we lost to a very good Punxsutawney team.  We did get some confidence in the second half, but we need to just move on and not dwell on this.”

The Lady Chucks, who had 10 three-pointers, ended up with four players in double figures.  Taylor Newcome had a game high 15, with Nicole Dipietro and Emily Horner each adding 11 and Jenson Constantino chipping in with 10.

It was the fourth straight win for Punxsutawney over Clearfield.

In the junior varsity game it was Punxsutawney coming away with the win over Clearfield 39-20. Janessa Riddell had six for the Lady Bison.

The Lady Bison (1-4) return to the hardwood with another road trip on Tuesday to Bald Eagle Area.  All the action begins with the junior varsity game at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
