Obituary Notice: Michael A. Gulvas

Michael A. Gulvas, 83, of DuBois died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 29, 1930 in DuBois, he was the son of the late Andrew and Anna (Potash) Gulvas.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.

On July 30, 1955, he married Loretta J. (Benigni) Gulvas.  She survives.

He spent his entire career in the grocery business.  He started as the assistant manager at Riverside on Main Street in DuBois.  He then progressed to a district manager of the Riverside Division of the Penn Traffic Company for many years.

He then purchased the Reynoldsville Riverside, now known as Mike’s Bi-Lo. He continued as the owner until the present.

He was a member of the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, where he served as chairman for the Polish Festival for many years.  He also was past president of the DuBois Jaycees and a past member of the DuBois Kiwanis Club.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who he adored and following all of their many activities.

He is survived by five children  Denny Gulvas and his wife, Karen, Theresa Kister and her husband, Kevin, Kathleen Hanslovan and her husband, Ron, Ed Gulvas and his wife, Sueann and Cindy Foster and her husband, Gary, all of DuBois; a sister, Margaret Sherback of Connecticut; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Gulvas and two sisters, Ankie Rutkowski and Helen Bockoras.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Daniel Kresinski as celebrant.

Full military honors will be accorded from the church by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard.

Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery.
