Campus Corner: Barger Places Fifth in Ohio Northern Tourney

ADA, Ohio — Lycoming freshman Nolan Barger (Clearfield) placed fifth at 157 pounds in the 33rd Ohio Northern University Invitational at the ONU Sports Center Saturday.

Seeded No. 8 among the 22 wrestlers from 12 teams in NCAA Division II and Division III and the NAIA, Barger won four of six matches to improve his record to 11-6.

After defeating Olivet’s Jacob Gould, Barger was dropped into the consolation bracket by No. 1 seed Luke Lohr of Waynesburg, 10-3. Lohr won 13-4 when the two met Nov. 23 in the Mount Union (Ohio) Duals.

Barger bested No. 6 seed Caleb Huff of Alma 6-3 and Lycoming teammate Brian Watkins 3-2 before being bumped into the fifth-place bout by No. 7 seed Bryan Skoff of West Liberty in a tight 2-0 duel.

Barger then nipped Heidelberg’s Brian Brunner 3-2 with an escape and takedown in the third period.

Lohr beat Skoff for third place, while Watkins finished eighth.

Lycoming wound up seventh with 74.5 points.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Freshman Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) competed in one sprint and two jumping events for Clarion at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker at the Watson & Tressel Training Site Friday.

Her time of 8.53 seconds was good for 22nd in the 60-meter dash, which had 30 entries.

Shomo triple jumped 31 feet, 6½ inches (9.61 meters) for 14th place and long jumped 15 feet, 8¼ inches (4.79 meters) for 16th place. Those field events had 15 and 26 entries, respectively.
