Obituary Notice: Francis L. Cherry

Francis L. Cherry, 89, of DuBois died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013 at Christ the King Manor.

Born April 18, 1924, he was the son of the late James and Mary (Colosi) Cherry.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II.

On Sept. 1, 1962, he married Theresa M. (Mitchell) Cherry.  She survives.

He retired from the sales department at Owens-Brockway after many years of service.  Prior to that, he was also the owner/operator of Francis L. Cherry Insurance Agency.

He was a member of the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, where he was an usher for many years.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 519 and Assembly No. 2661 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and the DuBois Lions, where he was very active.  He was a former member of the Old Towne Beagle Club and a former member of the Holy Name Society.

He’s survived by his daughter, Maria J. Cherry of Grampian and three grandchildren, Justine, Travis and Alyssa.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph J. Cherry, James A. Cherry, The Honorable John A. Cherry, Henry R. “Rocky” Cherry, Dr. George S. Cherry, Edward V. Cherry, Esq. and Dr. Louis J. “Skip” Cherry and two sisters, Grace R. Cherry and Josephine M. Cherry.

He was the last surviving member of his generation of the Cherry Family.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 1:45 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

A Military Ritual Service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Richard Siefer as celebrant.

Burial will be in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard.
