Woodland Man Pleads Guilty in Assault Cases
CLEARFIELD – A Woodland man charged with assault in two cases recently pleaded guilty during colloquy court with sentencing in Clearfield County.
Everson Brian Berringer, 23, an inmate of the jail, pleaded guilty to criminal trespass, terroristic threats, unlawful restraint, simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment in the first case and simple assault, terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and harassment in the second case. He was sentenced to six months to one year in jail and two years of probation. He was fined $685 plus costs. He must also complete 100 hours of community service. His sentence will run consecutive to a 90-day sentence he is serving for a protection from abuse order violation.
Berry Receives 33rd Degree Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry
Former Clearfield resident David W. Berry received the 33rd and last degree of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry during a recent annual meeting of the Supreme Council of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction held recently in Washington, D.C.
Clarion University Releases Workforce Plan
CLARION – The Clarion University of Pennsylvania released its workforce plan today.

Penn State Settles with 26 Sandusky Victims for $59.7 Million
UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State officials have announced that over the past few months, the University has reached an agreement with 26 of the victims of former assistant football coach Gerald Sandusky.
The terms of the settlements, which include a release of all claims against Penn State and other parties, are subject to confidentiality agreements. Of the 26 settlements, 23 are fully signed and three are agreed in principle, with final documentation expected within the next few weeks.
CASD Approves Class Trips to Historic Landmarks
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield High School students will visit historic landmarks in Gettysburg and Washington, D.C. before their graduation.
On Monday night, the Clearfield school board voted, 8-1, to approve a sophomore class field trip to Gettysburg and a senior class field trip to Washington, D.C. The cost of both trips will not exceed $10,000.
Federal Stimulus Funding for Food Stamp Program Set to Expire on Nov. 1
HARRISBURG – Federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will be reduced on Nov. 1, by approximately 5.4 percent due to the expiration of the federal stimulus package that temporarily increased funding for the program.
Drifting Man Pleads Guilty to Arson, Drug Charges
CLEARFIELD – A Drifting man pleaded guilty to arson and drug charges recently during plea and sentencing court in Clearfield County.
Ronald J. Veres, 30, 74 Hoot and Holler Ln., Drifting, an inmate of the jail, pleaded guilty to arson in one case, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance in a second case and driving under the influence in a third case. He was sentenced to a total of 115 days to two years less one day in jail and two years consecutive probation. He was fined $2,420 plus costs. He must pay more than $86,449 in restitution in the arson case. He was ordered to complete counseling, surrender his license and submit to DNA testing at a cost of $250.
Bull Elk Shot Illegally, Reward Offered
BENEETTE – A reward is being offered in relation to a bull elk that was shot illegally earlier this month.
The 5- by 5-point bull was found injured and hiding in a patch of goldenrod soon after daylight on Oct. 15, near Benezette in Elk County. The elk is believed to have been shot at about 3 a.m., when residents of Winslow Hill, near Benezette, heard several shots.
PA Crew Assists Other States during Wildfire Emergencies
EMPORIUM – For the 40th year, the Bureau of Forestry has dispatched personnel to assist other states during wildfire emergencies, and it’s the first deployment of crews to Alaska, where mosquitoes were as big as hummingbirds and it rained every day.
Pennsylvania Bio to Feature Emily Whitehead’s Story about Overcoming Cancer
WAYNE – Pennsylvania Bio, the statewide trade association representing Pennsylvania’s life sciences industry, will feature the parents of pediatric cancer survivor, Emily Whitehead, at the Life Sciences Future conference on Nov. 13, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.
Man Waives Hearing in Theft Case
CLEARFIELD – An out-of-state man accused of stealing an area woman’s car, other valuables from her home and then attempting to and opening up accounts with her personal information waived his right to a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Richard Ireland during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
RIDGWAY – The state police at Ridgway would like to warn area residents of recent scams that have involved individuals who are posing as court employees.
These individuals are contacting residents and advising them that they’ve been selected for jury duty. They are also advising some residents that they haven’t reported to jury duty as directed, state police said.
WJAC-TV: Truck Driver Falls from Bridge into River
BRADFORD TOWNSHIP – State police at Clearfield have initiated an investigation into an accident that resulted in a man falling more than 100 feet from a bridge along Interstate 80 into the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.
Bobbie Jo Merrell of Johnson City, Tenn. stopped his freightliner semi-truck along I-80 eastbound at mile-marker 121 in Bradford Township. He reportedly wanted to check for damage to his truck after striking the side barrier of I-80, state police said.
Former FOW Accused of Fleeing from Police Waives Hearing
DuBOIS – A former Fugitive of the Week charged with fleeing from police waived his right to a preliminary hearing during Centralized Court.
Damien Lee Irvin, 34, 4774 Rt. 322, Reynoldsville, an inmate of the jail, is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, two counts of recklessly endangering another person and several summaries. In a second case, he is charged with three counts of criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.
The Halloween rains caused multiple power problems across the Clearfield County area on Thursday night.
Penelec Area Manager John Shimko reported today that a total of 7,000 area Penelec customers were impacted by the storm. The areas with the largest number of people impacted, he said, were in Clearfield, Curwensville, Madera, Coalport and Beccaria.
Shaw Announces Opening of Central Booking Center
CLEARFIELD – A Central Booking Center has opened at the Clearfield County Jail, announced District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr. at a news conference yesterday afternoon.
DuBois Police Submit New Proposal for SRO Program to DASD
DUBOIS – A revised proposal has been submitted to the DuBois Area School District in an effort to continue the School Resource Officer (SRO) program, according to DuBois City police.
The SRO program has been in place for 14 years. Sen. Joseph Scarnati recently praised the program in September and allocated funding for additional school safety, police said.
