John A. “Jack” Zakutney, 82, of Philipsburg died Monday, Oct. 21, 2013 at his residence.
Born Feb. 5, 1931 in Punxsutawney, he was the son of the late Stephen and Elizabeth (Susko) Zakutney.
He attended the Houtzdale High School and graduated in 1948. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Cannon University and his Master’s degree from Penn State University.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.
Mr. Zakutney was a teacher at the Philipsburg Osceola High School and retired in 1992 after
39. years of service.
He was a parishioner of the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Philipsburg. He was a church organist for 60 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Holy Family Council 8701, Morrisdale, and Pope John Paul II 4th Degree Assembly No. 952, Clearfield. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid reader.
On June 8, 1963 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Osceola Mills, he married Carol A. (Visnofsky) Zakutney. She survives of Philipsburg.
He’s survived by a daughter, Stephanie A. Showers of Philipsburg; a daughter-in-law, Christine Zakutney of Wall Township, NJ; three grandchildren, Ryan Showers, Abby Showers and Emma Zakutney; and one step-grandson, Matt Ford. He’s also survived by a sister, Sister Barbara Ann Zakutney of Erie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Steven J. Zakutney, on July 1, 2008; a granddaughter, Dana Zakutney, on July 1, 2013; two brothers, Edward and Bernard Zakutney; and one infant sister, Elizabeth Ann Zakutney.
Friends will be received from 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. Thursday at the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with Fr. Robert J. Kelly as celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Brisbin.
