4-H & FFA Livestock Sale Committee Announces Scholarship Winners

The Clearfield County 4-H & FFA Livestock Sale Committee has announced the recipients of this year’s 4-H & FFA Livestock Sale Scholarship.

Each recipient met all of the eligibility requirements, which included being enrolled in some form of post-secondary education and being an active Livestock Sale Participant within four years of applying.

The 4-H and FFA members are eligible to receive the scholarship for a maximum of four years as long as they continue to meet the scholarship requirements.  Former 4-H and FFA members are also eligible up to their fourth year after graduation.

All scholarship applications were due to the Livestock Sale Committee on Sept. 15.

William (Billy) Ellinger Jr. was also named a scholarship recipient this year.  He’s a former member of the Clearfield County 4-H Dairy Club and is currently a junior at Penn State University – University Park Campus, where he’s majoring in turfgrass science. He’s the son of William and Valerie Ellinger of Luthersburg.

Another scholarship recipient is Jenna Kirk.  She’s a former member of the Clearfield County 4-H Dairy Club.  She’s taking online courses through Allied Schools for a degree in medical coding. She’s the daughter of Glenn and Lee Ann Kirk or Rockton.

Chelsey Hughes was also among the selected scholarship recipients.  She’s a member of the Harmony 4-H Club and is a sophomore at St. Francis University with plans to become a pharmacist.  She’s the daughter of Tom and Sherry Hughes of LaJose.

Chris Leonard was selected as a recipient of the scholarship.  He’s a member of the Clearfield FFA Chapter.  He’s in his second year at Pennsylvania College of Technology and is pursuing a degree in transportation and natural resources technologies with a caterpillar equipment emphasis.  He’s the son of the Rev. Kenneth Leonard Jr. of Frenchville and Jennifer Teklinski of Clearfield.

Another scholarship recipient is Seth Michaels, a former member of the Clearfield County 4-H Beef Club.  He’s in his second year at Triangle Tech of DuBois, where he’s pursuing a degree in carpentry.  He’s the son of Robert and Kim Michaels of Clearfield.

Alyssa Reams was selected as a scholarship recipient. She’s a member of both the Clearfield FFA Chapter and the Clearfield County 4-H Beef Club.  She’s enrolled on-line with Penn Foster Career School in the veterinary technician program.  She’s the granddaughter of Dewaine and Melvina Kephart of Osceola Mills.

Another scholarship recipient was Alicia Sneath.  She’s a member of the Harmony 4-H Club and is currently a sophomore at Mount Aloysius College, where she is studying physical therapy.  She’s the daughter of Craig and Lou Ann Sneath of LaJose.

For a third year, Devon Turner, a former member of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club, was selected as a scholarship recipient.  He’s currently a junior at Penn State University – University Park Campus, where he’s majoring in environmental resource management. He’s the son of Mark and Sally Turner of Philipsburg.

“A very sincere thank you goes out to everyone who helped make this scholarship possible, especially all of our 2013 buyers, all of the very special people and businesses that donated money directly to the scholarship, and the Livestock Sale Committee for adopting this scholarship and helping it grow each year,” said Jana Davidson, 4-H Youth Development Educator.  “Thanks to the generosity of so many, we had close to $3,800 distributed in scholarships this year.”

If you would be interested in donating to the scholarship fund, donations can be sent directly to the Clearfield County 4-H & FFA Livestock Club, P.O. Box 104, Clearfield, PA  16830.  All donations are appreciated and money collected between now and next September will be distributed to eligible 4-H and FFA members in 2014. 

4-H is a non-formal youth development educational program of Penn State Cooperative Extension for all youth between the ages of 8 and 19, regardless of age, ancestry, color, disability or handicap, genetic information, national origin, race, religious creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or veteran status.

“Both 4-H and FFA are very similar programs that really help youth develop into tomorrow’s leaders through skills and knowledge gained through their work on numerous project areas,” said Davidson.
