Donald F. Smith, 88, of Coalport and formerly of Madera, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013 at the home of his son, Garey Smith. He was born March 3, 1925, in Madera, a son of the late Jacob and Vera (Kitko) Smith.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked in construction as a heavy equipment operator for the Roland Tiracorda Construction and Andrew Thomas Construction Companies, both of Madera.
Mr. Smith was a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church, Houtzdale, and was a past officer and member of the Madera MOOSE Lodge No. 1172 and a past member of the Madera VFW. He was an avid turkey hunter and enjoyed fishing.
He’s survived by three sons, Garey Smith Sr. and his wife, Kathleen of Sanborn, Dean Smith and his wife, Linda of Madera and Wayne Smith Sr. of Altoona.
He’s also survived by four grandchildren, Shawn Smith, Garey Smith Jr. and his wife, Lori, Shane Smith and Wayne Smith Jr.; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia (Grattan) Smith on Aug. 23, 1992; and his siblings, Gloria Tobias, Francis Smith, Fred Smith, Elizabeth Dougherty and Genevieve Blackburn.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Kruise Funeral Home Inc., Madera. Military honors will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home by the Osceola Mills Honor Guard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Houtzdale. Burial will follow in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Madera. Condolences may be sent to: condolences@kruisefuneralhome.com.
