Five People Severely Injured after Vehicles Burst into Flames
PINE TOWNSHIP – Five people sustained severe injuries after two vehicles burst into flames after an accident on state Route 153 on Saturday in Pine Township, reported the state police at Clearfield.
Nicolls Reports on Student Growth Scores at CASD
CLEARFIELD – Bruce Nicolls, director of curriculum and coordinator of federal programs, reported that overall student growth scores were “pretty good” during a brief administrative report at Monday night’s Clearfield school board meeting.
Nicolls said the district had recently received its Pennsylvania Valued-Added Assessment System (PVAAS) scores, which measure student growth in cohorts from year-to-year. He plans to give a complete presentation on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) and PVAAS data at a future school board meeting.
Clearfield Man Sentenced for Poaching Bull Elk
CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield man has been sentenced for unlawfully killing a bull elk, according to Clearfield County District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr.
Shaw identified the defendant as Timothy Lee Gormont Jr., 18, of Mill Road, Clearfield. On Aug. 13, Wildlife Conservation Officer Mark Gritzer of the Pennsylvania Game Commission filed a criminal complaint, charging Gormont with unlawful killing or taking of big game.
WJAC-TV: NCAA to Restore PSU Football Scholarships

HARRISBURG — The NCAA says it will gradually restore football scholarships taken from Penn State over the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal, saying the school has made significant changes to its athletics programs.
College sports’ governing body said Tuesday that five scholarships will be restored next year and more will be phased in until the school reaches normal totals in 2016-17.

Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-5) and Charlie Dent (PA-15) have issued the following statement in response to the decision by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Executive Committee to gradually restore the scholarships that were rescinded from Penn State University in July of 2012.
DCED Hears about Economic Impact of Unconventional Oil and Gas Industry in Clearfield County
CLEARFIELD – Representatives from the state Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) visited the Clearfield County Economic Development Corp. (CCEDC) to learn about the economic impact of the unconventional oil and gas industry in Clearfield County and North Central Pennsylvania.
The visit was a part of a four-day DCED on the Road Tour through North Central’s six-county region and highlighted development projects.
Flood-affected Municipalities Keep Fingers Crossed for Federal Funding
CLEARFIELD – Municipalities affected by the torrential flooding that occurred at the end of June in northwestern Clearfield County are still crossing their fingers for federal assistance, Joe Bigar, director of the Clearfield County Emergency Management Agency, reported at Tuesday’s commissioner’s meeting.
DuBois Man Headed to Trial in Statutory Sexual Assault Case
DUBOIS – A DuBois man will stand trial for having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.
Ronald Bruce Fraiser Jr., 23, of 32 Tinkers Rd., DuBois, is charged with eight counts of statutory sexual assault and one count of corruption of minors. After a preliminary hearing, Magisterial District Judge Patrick Ford dismissed seven additional counts of corruption of minors. Fraiser is free on $50,000, bail.
DuBois Man Accused of Home Invasion Waives Hearing
CLEARFIELD – A 49-year-old DuBois man accused of a home invasion last week in the Glen Richey area waived his right to a preliminary hearing during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
Ned Carmen Caldwell III, 49, of DuBois is facing charges of aggravated assault; simple assault; recklessly endangering another person; terroristic threats; stalking; harassment; criminal mischief; burglary; and criminal trespass. He is incarcerated at the CCJ in lieu of $100,000 bail.
WJAC-TV: Suspect Dead after Police Standoff
DUBOIS – The Pennsylvania State Police have confirmed the suspected gunman is dead after shooting a trooper early Thursday afternoon on Cemetery Hill Road just outside of Brockway.
Further, Trooper Bradley Wilson was shot and critically wounded while he and another trooper were attempting to serve a search warrant due to suspected drug activity at the residence. When approaching the residence someone who was inside fired shots at them from a window.
