Thompson Issues Statement on Farm Bill Advancing in House, Passage of Nutrition Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, R-Howard, has issued the following statement after voting to support H.R. 3102, The Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity Act. The measure passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 217-210.

“There is widespread recognition among members in both parties of the need to move forward with updates to the nation’s agriculture and nutrition programs, both of which are in need of reform. The only way to achieve this end is to enact a new farm bill reauthorization. The House moved another step forward in this process.

“We have a moral obligation to ensure that the neediest of individuals receive basic nutrition. We also have an obligation to live within our means and ensure that government policies promote, rather than impede, economic opportunity. It is my hope that the House and Senate will be able to find common ground and produce a final package of reforms that achieves these goals.”

In specific regard to H.R. 3102, Thompson referred to the bill as “far from perfect”.
