Programs Slated at Parker Dam

PENFIELD – The following list of programs has been slated for the Parker Dam State Park.

Friday, Sept. 20

Pennsylvania’s Elk Herd

7 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

They are one of the many reasons visitors come to the park.  But seeing elk in PA, and respecting the animals and the environment they’re found in can be difficult.  Learn more about making your elk encounter rewarding.

Saturday, Sept. 21

Creating a Butterfly Garden

2 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

Come learn more about what it takes to make a butterfly garden one that the butterflies will flock toward.  A local scout has worked hard this summer to re-establish one of the park’s gardens– learn about the process and steps that you can take at home to improve habitat.

Big Dam Movie:

7 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Only humans change their environment more than the engineering beaver.  They haven’t always been as plentiful in the Commonwealth as they are today however.  Learn more about what it might be like to live the life of a beaver.

Sunday, Sept. 22

Hike to the Vista:

2 p.m. – Lou and Helen Adams CCC Museum

In 2013, a second vista was placed at the top of the Trail of New Giants.  If you haven’t yet seen the new view, this is your chance– and the leaves should be pretty colorful too.  The hike is moderately difficult on the spur to the vista, but is a less than 1.5-mile loop.  Please wear appropriate footwear for a hike in the woods.

Saturday, Sept. 28

National Public Lands Day:

9 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

It is a day set aside each year for people to take stock in the public lands that belong to us all.  Join other volunteers for a few short hours (until noon) of sprucing up one of your favorite state parks.  There will be several projects for volunteers to work on.

Skunk!:

7 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Striped and smelly aren’t the only two words that describe a skunk– smart is another.  The intelligence of these small creatures may make you look at them in a whole other light.  Learn more about these mammals common to our backyards and forests.

Sunday, Sept. 29

Souder’s Trail Hike:

2 p.m. – outside Park Office

Join us for an easy loop hike through a section of the park that should be putting on its fall show.  There is a little history to be learned along the trail as well.  All in all, plan for simple stroll through the autumn forest.  Please wear appropriate footwear for a hike in the woods.
