TYRONE – The Average Joe’s, a Junior Achievement group at Tyrone Area High School, made a donation of $154 to the Tyrone Hospital Foundation with funds to be directed to digital mammography technology for Tyrone Hospital’s Breast Cancer & Women’s Health Institute of Central Pennsylvania (BCWHI).

The Average Joe’s raised the funds by selling lanyards. Buyers had their choice of lanyards in the Tyrone School District Golden Eagles colors of black and orange or the signature pink color of breast cancer awareness.  The students sold the lanyards at various school and community events.

Joe Gearhart, president of the Average Joe’s Junior Achievement group, said the group wanted to make a contribution to Tyrone Hospital, “because we want to give back to our community and make a difference in the lives of all the mothers and women out there who need help.”

“It’s great to see this support for Tyrone Hospital starting early, with students in our school district, said Stephen Gildea, chief executive officer at Tyrone Hospital.  “We are very grateful for the contribution from the Average Joe’s.  These students are to be commended for their leadership. Hard work and community support.”

The Junior Achievement groups at Tyrone Area high School are under the direction of instructor Cummins McNitt.  Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs.

Junior Achievement programs help to prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. Students put these lessons into action and learn the value of contributing to their communities.
