Obituary Notice: Calvin L. “Kelly” Burge

Calvin L. “Kelly” Burge, 83, of Morrisdale died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was born April 4, 1930, the son of the late John and Rachel Price Burge.

Mr. Burge was a member of the Gethsemane United Methodist Church, Allport.  He was a graduate of the Morris Township High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1955 during the Korean War.

Before his military service, he worked at Bailey Coal Co. He retired from the Army Corp of Engineers after 30 years, where he was the head maintenance engineer at Raystown Dam. He also assisted in many other dam projects throughout his career.

He was a life member of the Moshannon Lodge No. 391, Free & Accepted Masons, Philipsburg, for 50 years, the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, 32 Degree Consistory, Altoona, the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona and the American Legion Post 0437, Philipsburg. He was also a member of the Centre Hill Grange, Morrisdale.

He married Geraldine M. “Jerry” Dunn Burge on Aug. 5, 1995 in the Gethsemane United Methodist Church, Allport. She survives in Morrisdale.

Mr. Burge is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Ann Murray and her husband, Steve of Huntingdon and step-daughters, Kathy Mohnal and her husband, John and Pamela Hummel and her husband, William, both of Morrisdale and a son, Kevin L. Burge of Huntingdon and a step-son, Douglas Bell and his companion, Sandra Nesbitt of Clearfield.

Also surviving are a sister, Madeline Hassinger of Philipsburg; a brother, James Burge and his wife, Edna of Morrisdale; two grandchildren, Danielle Murray and Amanda Randoll; four step-grandchildren, Mark Bell and his wife, Melinda, Steve Bell, Stuart Hummel and Erica Stewart and her husband, Chad; two great-grandchildren, Adrian and Carmen Randoll; and four step-great-grandchildren, Jordan and Joshua Bell and Broc and Bryan Bell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Carmen Burge; four sisters, Mary Acton, Mildred Witters, Geraldine Pellow and Helen Waring; and one brother, John Burge.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Gethsemane United Methodist Church, Allport, with the Rev. Heather Baker-McAllister officiating. Burial will be in the Philipsburg Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church.

A Masonic funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday. Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.
