TYRONE – The Tyrone Hospital Medical Staff announced that they have awarded scholarships in the amount of $500 each to Milanka Tomasevic and Keturah Weaver. Both students are from Tyrone Area High School’s 2013 graduating class.

Kishor Patel, M.D., president of the Tyrone Hospital medical staff said a scholarship is awarded annually to a senior at Tyrone High School’s Health Occupations Technology Program who will pursue a health care profession.  “We are pleased to provide some support to local students who choose healthcare as a career path.  Ms. Tomasevic , Ms. Weaver and other students pursuing healthcare careers will be filling a very real need as members of the next generation of healthcare professionals.”

The Health Occupations Technology Program at Tyrone High School provides students exposure to health care careers and leadership through medically oriented classes, internships and shadowing opportunities at area healthcare facilities, and a variety of community service projects

Tomasevic of Tyrone will attend the Pennsylvania College of Technology and pursue studies to become a physician assistant (PA).  “I am very thankful for being selected as a scholarship recipient. This will really help me with pursuing my career as a physician assistant, said Tomasevic.”  Her goal is to work in a hospital in a big city.

Tomasevic was in the Tyrone Area High School Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) program throughout her high school years which fostered her interest in becoming a physician assistant.  Her  activities include a job at Victoria’s Secret, working at the Tyrone Elementary School day care and participating in the future business Leaders of America Club.(FBLA).

Weaver of Tyrone will attend the University of Pittsburgh to pursue studies to become a pharmacist. “I am extremely thankful that I was selected for the scholarship, said Weaver, “It will definitely make a difference in paying for my college expenses. I can’t thank Tyrone Hospital enough!”

Weaver was not a student in the HOSA program but was nominated for the scholarship.  She shadowed for a day in the Tyrone Hospital pharmacy. She was also a Tyrone Hospital Volunteer in the pharmacy for nearly a year.

“I selected the medical field because I knew I wanted to help people and make a difference in people’s lives, said Weaver.  Her interest in pharmacy developed from her interest in chemistry and biology. She said her interest heightened after working as a volunteer in Tyrone Hospital’s pharmacy under pharmacy director Lonnie Ross.

Weaver said her goal is to work as a pharmacist in a hospital somewhere in the local area.

Weaver was salutatorian of her graduating class. During her high school years she was involved in tennis, track, ski club, student council and the National Honor Society. She also worked at Marianna’s and during the summer at DelGrosso’s Amusement Park, where she was promoted to a manager position this summer.
