Clearfield SPCA Launches New Web site, Gets Donation from CBS Soap Star

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) recently launched its new Web site and received a special donation.

After going live July 5, an SPCA board member tweeted the Web site to Tracey E. Bregman. She is better known for her long-time casting role as Lauren Fenmore Baldwin on CBS day-time drama, The Young and the Restless.

CASD Unhappy with Progress of High School Project

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Area School District Board of Directors isn’t happy with its contractors for the renovation and expansion at the Clearfield Area High School, while the $36 million project is behind schedule.

Three Weeks Later . . . ARC Continues to Assist Families Affected by Recent Flooding

DUBOIS – Late last month, heavy rain caused major flooding in Clearfield and Jefferson counties. Immediately, the American Red Cross in Western Pennsylvania was on-the-ground, providing assistance to affected residents. More than three weeks later, the organization is still working with affected families to help them on their path to recovery.

Red Cross workers operated a service delivery site at the Reynoldsville Fire Department and then at the Red Cross office in DuBois, for nearly two weeks. Affected residents were able to meet one-on-one with Red Cross volunteers who assessed and helped provide for their disaster-caused needs. Since the service delivery site closed, residents have been able to meet with Red Cross workers at the chapter office during its normal business hours.

Houtzdale Man Faces Drug Charges after Bust at Motel

CLEARFIELD – A Houtzdale man has been charged with 21 drug violations following an investigation into drug activity at a local motel last week, according to the office of Magisterial District Judge Richard Ireland.

Richard Allen Demko Jr., 19, of Houtzdale is facing seven counts each of manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; intentional possession of controlled substance by person not registered; and use/possession of drug paraphernalia.

Gas prices up 15 Cents in Past Week; Great Lakes Region Suffers Steepest Price Hikes in the Nation

CHICAGO – The national average price of gasoline today – $3.67 per gallon – is up 15 cents from where it stood just one week ago and nowhere in the country has the price climb been any steeper than in the Great Lakes region.

“Indiana’s prices have risen by 29 cents over the past week, nearly double the rate of increase the rest of the country is seeing,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.  “And the price escalation has been nearly as exasperating for consumers in Michigan (27 cents), Illinois (26 cents) and Wisconsin (23 cents)”

Manhunt Under Way for Man Accused of Assaulting Police Officer

CLEARFIELD – A manhunt is currently under way and being conducted by the Clearfield County Sherriff’s Department, the Morris-Cooper Regional police and the Clearfield County Department of Emergency Services.

Authorities are searching for Matthew Rockey, 22, of 105 Limb Rd., Cooper Township. He’s been accused of assaulting a police officer and fleeing the scene on foot after police attempted to serve a warrant for his failure to appear after a probation violation.

Disaster Assistance Approved for Three PA Counties

HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett today announced that the U.S. Small Business Administration approved his request to declare the counties of Jefferson, Clearfield and Fayette a disaster area after flooding in western Pennsylvania from weather events starting June 27.

Citizens in the three counties and the 14 counties that border them may be eligible for low-interest disaster loans through the SBA Disaster Loan Programs.  The bordering counties are as follows: Armstrong, Blair, Clarion, Cambria, Cameron, Centre, Clinton, Elk, Forest, Greene, Indiana, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland.

Judge Rejects Motions in Domino’s Robbery Case

CLEARFIELD – A Hyde man accused of robbing a local pizza shop was in court July 9 to challenge evidence in his case.

William Lee Rauch, 35, 1322 Clarendon Ave., Hyde, an inmate of the jail, is accused of robbing Domino’s Pizza in Clearfield Borough on April 4. He’s facing charges of robbery, simple assault, terroristic threats, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property,harassment and disorderly conduct.

Council: Lawrence Twp. Unduly Strains Borough’s Public Safety Depts.

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council doesn’t believe Lawrence Township is providing adequate police and fire coverage and says this is putting undue strain on borough public safety departments.
