Joseph Dominic Varacallo fondly known as “Cappy,” to family and friends, has passed into eternal peace on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Christ the King Manor.
He was born Jan. 4, 1923, the son of Tomasina Molinaro Varacallo Greco and Dominick Varacallo, who preceded him in death.
The world is a better place because of the time he spent devoting his life to community service and family. He was preceded in death by his brother, Albert Varacallo and two sisters, Jennie Kosko and Mary Ferut.
He leaves behind the love of his life, and wife of 59 years, Eva (Rosman) Varacallo, and their three children, Joseph Varacallo and his wife, Mary, Carol Foltz and her husband, Tom and Kay Varacallo.
His family also included seven grandchildren, TJ Foltz and his wife, Danielle, Justin and Kristine Foltz, Alexandra and Haley Varacallo, Douglas Karoleski and his fiancée, Kara and Jeffrey Karoleski and four great-grandchildren, Eva and Gia Foltz and Hayden and Heath Karoleski. He was also survived by one brother, William Varacallo and his wife, Margie and several nieces and nephews.
Born in Sykesville, he was a life-long and last charter member of the Sykesville Lions Club, serving as president as well as chairperson for the Sykesville Pancake Fries and benefit Spaghetti dinners at the town hall for many years.
He was instrumental in the creation of Stahl Park, Sykesville Little League Park, and the Town Hall in Sykesville. He was honored as “Man of the Year” in 1965. His 42-year career at Rockwell Manufacturing started in Sykesville as superintendent progressing to plant manager of Rockwell Plant No. 2. Although he was not fond of water, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, traveling all over the world. His love of family was self-evident in everything he did. In his free time he enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great nieces and nephews playing ball, an occasional trip to Salamanca and being involved in his community.
Friends will be received from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home. A Parastas will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Church in Sykesville with the Rev. Fr. Robert K. Yetsko, T.O.R. officiating.
