Summer Reading Program Resumes July 9

bigstock-News-4723236CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library continued its Dig Into Reading summer reading program with entertaining magic and a wealth of information on fossils.

M&M Magic wowed an audience of nearly 150 people. Preschoolers learned about dinosaurs through crafts, and Peggy Johnston of Penn State DuBois presented to school-age youth about her experience with fossils.

The library invites youth back to Dig Into Reading  on July 9 with more underground fun. There will not be any summer reading programs held during the week of the Independence Day holiday.

On July 9 at 10:30 a.m., participants will set off on an adventure to find a missing archeologist, as Shaw Public Library welcomes puppeteer Adam Swartz and his show, “Joe Flashlight and the Mystery of the Missing Archaeologist.” Children and adults alike will be encouraged to join in the fun and work together with puppets and human characters to solve the mystery. Leading the expedition is Joe Flashlight, puppet detective, who will use science and imagination to dig for clues, encounter new and different creatures, and need lots of help from the audience along the way. This story is sure to inspire creative and critical thinkers of all ages.

Tammy Henry of Tammy’s Garden will assist School Age A and School Age B participants in creating a garden July 10 at 10:30 am. Registration for this program is limited to 25 participants. Call the library or visit the front desk to sign-up to attend this program.

School Age A and School Age B participants wrap up the week with a take on a craft idea from the past. All participants are asked to bring a medium-sized rock to the library on July 11 at 10:30 a.m. Youth will decorate the rock to resemble their favorite animal.

The Garden Shop will open for all youth participants on July 8. Hours will be available on Mondays and Fridays for youth to redeem any earned reading and program attendance incentives.

Beneath the Surface, a summer reading program for young adults, continues on July 11 at 2 p.m. “Photography Beneath the Surface” will be presented by local photographer Stephanie Errigo of Majestic Images. Errigo will share information on how to take great photos, choosing locations to shoot, and other important photography facts. Participants are encouraged to bring their own cameras, as Errigo will then assist those in attendance in taking photos. Those interested in attending are required to register for the program at the front desk of the library prior to 5 p.m. July 9.

Adults enrolled in the Groundbreaking Reads summer reading program are reminded to direct questions for the “Got Gadgets?” program to Shaw Public Library staff by July 10. Also, any interested adult may submit a recipe using fresh fruits and or vegetables to be compiled into a “From Garden to Table” recipe book.

Forms for both question submission and recipe submission are available at the front desk of the library. Finally, any adult interested in learning more about Facebook should contact the front desk of the library for more information on a Facebook Photo Novice class.

Young adults and adults may begin redeeming reading incentives at the front desk of the library on July 8.

Registration for the Dig Into Reading summer reading program continues through the end of July. All registrations are completed online at Shaw Public Library’s Web site. Registration is completed when participants pick up their registration packets at the front desk of the library.

Children ages birth through pre-school age should enroll in the Read-to-Me program. Youth who have completed kindergarten through grade two are encouraged to participate in the School Age A program and those who have completed grades three through five will enroll in the School Age B program.

The Beneath the Surface young adult summer reading program is open to anyone who has completed grades six through eleven, and Groundbreaking Reads adult summer reading program is available to all adults, including 2013 high school graduates.
