The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for a portion of central Pennsylvania.
As of Wednesday morning, the flash flood watch was in effect until early Friday for counties including Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Cameron, Centre, Clearfield, Elk, Huntingdon and Somerset. An areal flood watch was issued for Indiana and Jefferson counties.
Flash flooding will be possible due to excessive rainfall rates Thursday afternoon and evening. Flooding of low-lying and poor drainage areas is likely, and rapid rises on streams could result, causing some streams to overflow their banks.
The NWS said heavy downpours are expected to produce rainfall rates exceeding two to three inches per hour. Widespread storm totals of one to two inches of rain are expected, with more than three inches of rain possible where storms are slow-moving.
A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. The NWS said because flash flooding is a very dangerous situation, people should know their your location with respect to low water crossings and be prepared to move to higher ground should flash flood warnings be issued.
