WJAC-TV: Corbett Signs Anti-abortion Coverage Bill in PA
HARRISBURG – A new Pennsylvania law will prohibit coverage of most abortions under policies offered in a federally-run insurance marketplace starting next year.
Gov. Tom Corbett’s office said he signed the bill Monday. Corbett’s office has said that it wouldn’t place any greater restrictions on access to abortion than already exist.
CASD Hears Insurance Policy and Premium Summary
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Area School District Board of Directors heard a summary of insurance policies and their premiums that are being considered for renewal during Monday night’s committee meetings.
Renewal premiums for the district’s commercial package for buildings with ACE USA and workers compensation with Highmark increased the most. More specifically renewal premiums for the workers compensation and commercial package increased by $18,839 and $11,182, respectively, according to Sam Maney, business administrator.
As a result, he said the district’s total premium increased from $251,271 for the current-year to a renewal rate of $286,182. However, he said it is still covered from a budget standpoint, as the district has tentatively allocated $298,069 for insurance purposes for 2013-14.
Corbett Signs Law Allowing Crime Victims’ Testimony
HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett has signed House Bill 492, amending the Crime Victims Act to allow victims or their representatives to testify in person before the state Parole Board before it decides whether to release an offender from prison.
LT Supers Hear County’s Proposed Plan for Water Service
CLEARFIELD – Lisa Kovalick, Community Development Specialist for Clearfield County, addressed the Lawrence Township Supervisors and requested their assistance in a county project at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Kovalick explained the county’s proposal to resolve “a water service gap in the township.” Residents in the area of Glen Richey Highway and Clover Hill, Parker, Bloom and Log Cabin roads have ongoing water problems, Kovalick said. The area includes about 11 road miles, she said.
Shaw: Three Men Charged for Home Invasion
SANDY TOWNSHIP – Three men have been charged with an early morning home invasion that took place Monday on Thunderbird Road in Sandy Township. The defendants have been identified as Eric Britton, 29, of Church Street, Falls Creek; Jeffrey Sprague, 28, of Coal Hollow Road, Verona and Austin Eheart, 20, of Palmyra, VA, according to Clearfield County District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr.
Yesterday Sergeant Rodney Fairman of the Sandy Township Police Department filed criminal complaints, charging the men with robbery; burglary; criminal trespass; criminal conspiracy; theft by unlawful taking; false imprisonment, two counts; and receiving stolen property.
Bloom and Berry Bash to Feature Farmer’s Markets, Crafts and More
CLEARFIELD – The first-ever Bloom and Berry Bash will be held from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. this Saturday on Market and Third streets in downtown Clearfield.
The Clearfield Revitalization Corp. (CRC) is the host of the “friendly, summer event” for children and families of all ages. The CRC has more than 60 vendors participating from farmer’s markets, crafts, downtown and local businesses, artisans, children’s activities, live entertainment and much more.
Man Waives Hearing in Sexual Assault Case
CLEARFIELD – A Curwensville man accused of sexual assault waived his right to a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge James Hawkins during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
Richard Coy Bennett Jr., 50, of Curwensville is facing charges of statutory sexual assault; involuntary deviate sexual intercourse; sexual assault; corruption of minors (two counts); indecent assault; and selling or furnishing liquor or malt or brewed beverages to minors.
Shaw: Accused Home Intruders Facing Additional Charges in DuBois City
DUBOIS – The three men accused of an early morning home invasion Monday in Sandy Township are now facing additional charges in DuBois City, according to Clearfield County District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr.

Clearfield Borough Residents Riled Over Yard Waste
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council heard from several residents regarding the issue of yard waste disposal at last night’s meeting.
Convenience Store Owner Gets Jail for Selling Synthetic Marijuana
CLEARFIELD – A convenience store owner pleaded guilty to selling synthetic drugs Tuesday during plea and sentencing court in Clearfield County.
Gurpreet Singh, 43, Clearfield, was sentenced for criminal conspiracy/delivery of a controlled substance to six months to one year less one day in jail and two years consecutive probation. In a second case, he pleaded guilty to the same charge and received a concurrent sentence of six months to one year less one day in jail. He was fined a total of $600 plus costs. He must complete counseling and submit to DNA testing.
