feature story 3

CLEARFIELD – A flower show themed, “Garden Party,” will be hosted July 13 by Clearfield’s Hobby Garden Club. The show will be from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church’s Westminster Hall in Clearfield.

This year’s flower show will be presented in honor of Bill and Connie Howe. They have been long-time club members; Connie Howe has judged the flower show for many years.

This year’s judges are Jan Petrosky, who is the president of the Down to Earth Garden Club in DuBois; Mary Jo Gomes, a member of the Down to Earth Garden Club in DuBois; and Gina Hepburn, a well-known artist of Penfield. Hepburn graduated from the School of Floral Design at Texas A&M University and works at the Brady Street Flower Shop in DuBois.

The flower show will feature 16, adult classes that include arrangements, hanging baskets, potted plants, fruits and vegetables and five horticulture categories. It will include a Children’s Flower Show of five classes for 7- to 12-year-olds. And, for the first time ever, it will include a Teenager’s Flower Show of five classes for 13- to 19-year-olds.

Judges will award a Best of Show in the Adult, Children’s and Teenager’s classes. They will also present awards for first, second and third place, as well as a People’s Choice Award. Participants are permitted one entry per class; however, they can enter every class.

Information tables will include floral arrangements by Club President Duane Test; heirloom seeds and plants by Carrie Baublitz; “A collection of Flower Pins” by Darlene Jury; and making flower arrangements from unusual items from around the house by Tammy Henry of Tammy’s Garden.

Refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be awarded. Budd Hollis will provide musical entertainment.

Members of the Hobby Garden Club will have their home-grown plants and flowers available to show attendees for a donation. This donation will benefit the Presbyterian Church.

Informational booklets are available at the Clearfield Agway, Clearfield Florist, Tammy’s Garden, the Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library, Curwensville Florists, Curwensville Feed Store, Gary Williams Beauty Shop, Philipsburg, or by calling Jane Hollis at 814-339-6289; Dottie Evans Crissman at 814-765-5621; Janet Cowder at 814-765-8125; or Duane Test at 814-236-2901.

This year the club is offering pre-entry, but flowers and plants can be entered the day of the show. An entry form is included in the informational booklet that can be used before or the day of the show.

The pre-entry procedure is intended to assist with those entering in multiple classes. There isn’t any charge to enter the flower show.

The pre-entry deadline is July 1, which means these participants’ tags will be prepared when they arrive with their flowers and plants. The tags will be placed on the arrangements. If participants decide to bring another entry the day of the show, they’ll complete another form and additional tags.

The participants who enter the day of the show should have their entry form completed when they arrive with their flowers and plants. Forms will also be available at the show. Their entry tags will be completed at the time of registration to be placed on their entries.

The Flower Club hopes that community members will attend and enjoy a day viewing beautiful flowers and plants of area gardeners from children to adults.
