Library Kicks Off Summer Reading Program

CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library kicked off its annual summer reading program with a week of prize drawings and registrations.

Those participants who had pre-registered for summer reading and those who registered during the week of June 10 were entered into several prize drawings to win T-shirts. Youth participants were also registered to win a pool pass donated by Clearfield Community Pool.  A number of exciting activities are planned for participants of all ages over the next several weeks.

Youth of all ages are encouraged to learn all about various snakes and reptiles during “Coldblooded Curiosity” at 10:30 a.m. June 18.  According to their Web site, Coldblooded Curiosity has “found that the best way for future generations and the general public to learn about our natural world, and the animals we share it with, is through hands on learning. Our educational presentations are highly engaging and allow the audience to get up close and personal with some of nature’s most interesting creatures.”  In addition, the Coldblooded Curiosity team has “highly trained animal handlers that will ensure that none of the animals or people will be put in danger during any presentation.”

Participants in the School Age A program can join the library at 10:30 a.m. June 19 for a unique craft called “Mole in a Hole.”  Youth will enjoy creating the mole and controlling his movements.

The youth programs for the first week wrap up June 20 at 10:30 a.m. with “Worm Farm,” which allows School Age B participants to create their own worm farm to observe how hardworking creatures make use of the earth.  All those in attendance are asked to bring a quart size or larger glass jar.

Young adult summer reading participants should contact the library to sign-up for the first YA program of the summer: “Jewelry Beneath the Surface.” The program will be held at 2 p.m. June 20. They are to call the front desk of Shaw Public Library at 814-765-3271 to register.

Registration for the Dig Into Reading summer reading program continues throughout the summer.  All registrations are completed online at the Shaw Public Library’s Web site www.clearfield.org/shaw. Participants are asked to pick up their registration packets at the front desk of the library upon registering for one of the programs.

Children ages birth through preschool age should enroll in the Read-to-Me program.  Youth who have completed kindergarten through the second grade are encouraged to participate in the School Age A program and those who have completed third through fifth grades should enroll in the School Age B program.

The Beneath the Surface young adult summer reading program is open to anyone who has completed the sixth through eleventh grades and Groundbreaking Reads adult summer reading program is available to all adults, including 2013 high school graduates.
