Obituary Notice: Bertha Louise Smith

Bertha Louise Smith, 92, a resident of Philipsburg, died Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Susque-View Home Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Lock Haven. Born Aug. 17, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Paul R. and Clara (Cowher) Harper.

On Aug. 31, 1940 at Hagerstown, MD, she married Verne E. Smith, who died July 7, 1985.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen Louise (Smith) Bossert and her husband, Thomas of Mill Hall; a son, Ronald Verne Smith and his wife, Sue of Friendsville and two sisters Helen E. “Eppy”  Thompson of Acworth, GA and Clarabelle Miller and her husband, Stanley of Clearfield.

Also surviving are four grandchildren, Jenifer Kay Bossert of Honolulu, HI, Matthew Thomas Bossert of Howard, Sean Smith of Friendsville and Jessica Smith of Philadelphia; a foster granddaughter, Joann Levan; three great-grandchildren, Ryan Bossert, Alec Bossert and Addison Smith, three foster great-grandchildren, Logan, Amber and Bethany Levan and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; a sister, Kathleen H. Fleckenstein and her husband, John and a brother, Paul R. Harper Jr. and his wife, Skip.

She was a 1938 graduate of Philipsburg High School and a 1939 graduate of Adele Allen School of Beauty.

She was a life- long member of Grace United Methodist Church, Philipsburg, where she was a Sunday school teacher and an officer of the board.

She also enjoyed traveling, quilting, reading and walking.

A private graveside service and burial will be held at the convenience of the family at the Philipsburg Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Thumma officiating. There will be no public visitation.
