TYRONE —TyroneHospital officials announced that Rhonda Travis, RN is the recipient of TyroneHospital’s Spirit of Nursing Award for 2013. Each year the hospital’s nursing staff nominates one of their fellow nurses to receive the award.

Travis is a registered nurse who works full-time on the night shift on TyroneHospital’s medical-surgical unit.  She has been employed at TyroneHospital since 2006.  She is a graduate of LockHavenUniversity, Clearfield campus.

Travis said she left her full-time position at TyroneHospital and went to casual status for short time. She said, “I wanted to explore other areas of nursing. But, I went back to my full-time status after just a short time. I missed it here. This is the only place I want to work. TyroneHospital is an exceptional hospital. There is a real family feel and true teamwork among co-workers here.”

Nurses who nominated Travis for the Spirit of Nursing Award had many complimentary comments about her. She is recognized for her holistic approach to nursing, her kindness and compassion, her willingness to always lend a hand to patients and co-workers, her positive professional attitude, her ability to bring out the best in others, her keen ability to anticipate others needs and always helping and going the extra mile for her patients.

Travis said she was shocked to learn she was the Spirit of Nursing Award Recipient, “Leaders came onto the nursing unit to announce this year’s recipient. I was looking around to see which of my co-workers it would be. I was shocked when I heard it was me!”

In the midst of all the accolades Travis turned the spotlight onto her co-workers.  “I like coming to work. My co-workers are great. They work as a team and do a great job. They are like family.  Nurses work very hard and have a lot of responsibility.  But, I enjoy my work. I like taking care of my patients.  I greatly value the people I work with.  This is where I want to be.”

Travis resides in Houtzdale with her husband, Mark and their sons, Trevor and Tyler.

The individual that receives the Spirit of Nursing Award is selected by their peers.

Members of the nursing staff submit the names of fellow nurses that they think should be honored with the award.  It is through this process that the nursing staff selects one nurse to honor.

Nurses may qualify for the award if they provide direct patient care, have a comprehensive knowledge about the art of nursing, demonstrate a commitment to giving excellent nursing care, serve as an advocate to patients and families, and serve as a role model for other nursing staff.

Sharon Fisher, Chief Nursing officer said, “We receive a lot of positive feedback about the nursing care provided at TyroneHospital. It is a pleasure to honor Mrs. Travis who is a shining example of the personalized care that our nurses provide.”

The hospital’s nursing department instituted the Spirit of Nursing Award in 2006 and grants the award on an annual basis to a nurse that demonstrates outstanding performance.
