Programs Announced at Parker Dam State Park

PENFIELD – The following programs have been scheduled for the ParkerDamState Park.

Friday, May 24

Souders Trail

2 p.m. – Ball Field

Join in on a leisurely walk following a popular park trail, which travels through both mature hardwood and cool, hemlock forests.  Part of the trail also parallels beautiful Laurel Run.  Please wear appropriate shoes.

Striped.  Smelly.  And…Smart?

8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

You know them when you see them.  You know them when you smell them.  But, do you really know a skunk?  They are more than a stripe and an odor.  Learn more about these common mammals and their amazing abilities when it comes to adapting and survival.

Saturday, May 25

Birds and Beans– Coffee Stroll

9 a.m. – Beach House 

Bring along a mug or cup for a hot beverage (coffee and tea provided), and we’ll set off on an easy walk to see what wildlife might be stirring around the park.  We’ll focus on seeing and hearing the many birds that call Parker Dam State Park home.

Remembering the Tree Army

11:30 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom 

This Memorial Day weekend, let’s take the chance to remember a great chapter in our country’s history. This year is the 80th anniversary of the CCC – come learn about their amazing legacy and what they did in the local area.

Beaver Dam Trail

2 p.m. – Beach House

Travel through varying habitats and have the opportunity to see diverse wildlife and their sign.  Part of this trail follows a historic railroad grade that you may learn a little about.  This two-mile loop is along easy terrain but please wear appropriate footwear.

Beavers

8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater 

Aside from humans, probably no animal changes its environment more than beavers. They were once trapped for their prized fur– so much that they were gone from the KeystoneState.  You can learn more about beavers and see some amazing scenes of beavers at work. 

Sunday, May 26

Kayak Basics 

1 p.m. – behind Beach House 

Bring your own, or borrow one of the limited numbers of park kayaks, paddles, and PFDs.  Learn the basics of what a kayak is, paddling techniques, safety, and more.  There is a $3 fee for all program participants.  Although not necessary to participate, if you would like to reserve a park kayak, please contact the Park Office.

History Walk

2 p.m. – Beach House

If you went back 50 years, what might you see?  Would Parker Dam be any different?  How about a hundred years?  Or, 500?  Learn more about how the area of the park has changed over the years.  We will be walking around the lake and crossing the spillway rocks, so please wear appropriate shoes for the journey.

Monday, May 27 – Memorial Day

“Fish for Free” Day

This is the first of two Fish For Free Days, designated by the state’s Fish & Boat Commission this summer. This year PA Fishing License not required; all other regulations apply.

Memorial Day Flag Raising

12 p.m. – Beach House

Join us as we raise the flag from half staff to full for Memorial Day.  Also learn a little about our flag’s tradition and this special day.
