Obituary Notice: Daniel L. Zendek Sr.

Daniel L. Zendek Sr., 87, of Smoke Run died Thursday, May 16, 2013 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing and RehabilitationCenter, Clearfield. Mr. Zendek was born in Utahville on Aug. 29, 1925, the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Matier) Zendek.

He was a parishioner of Christ The King Catholic Church, Houtzdale.  He worked as a coal miner and for the former Gus Manufacturing of Osceola Mills as a counter top and cabinet maker.

Mr. Zendek was veteran of the U.S. Army. He served as a PFC with Co. L 424th Rifleman Infantry Regiment during World War II. He served in Northern Frances, Ardennes, Rhineland and the Battle of the Bulge.  He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, American Theater Ribbon EAME with three bronze stars and the Victory Medal with Bronze Stars.

He was a member of the Janesville V.F.W. Post 6321, Smithmill.

On Sept. 25, 1948 in St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ramey, he married the former Stella Macker.

He is survived by his daughters and sons, Evelyn (Donald) Adamo of Red Lion, Helen (Robert) Lukens of Duncannon, Marie (James) McHugh of Smithmill, Daniel L. (Cathy) Zendek Jr. and Mark (Joann) Zendek, both of Houtzdale and Michael (Vicki) Zendek Sr. of Smokerun.

He has nine grandchildren, Stephanie Hauri, Daniel Zendek, Amy Lukens, Kistin Lukens, Mark Zendek, Jason Zendek, Melissa Zendek, Michael Zendek Jr., James McHugh, Rochelle Beiler and Ashley Miller and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Zendek is also survived by five sisters, Evelyn Banak of North Holmstead, OH, Mary Karas of North Canton, OH, Helen Kaston of Nashville, TN, Betty Shaw of Cleveland, OH and Irene Boerner of Canton, OH.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Macker Zendek on Dec. 8, 2001; six brothers, John, Albert, Philip, Joseph, Andrew and Steven and a sister, Margaret.

A  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Christ the KingChurch, Houtzdale. Burial will follow, with military honors, in HolyTrinityCatholicCemetery, Ramey. 

There will be no public visitation.
