Temporary signals will continue to control traffic
STATE COLLEGE – Work to replace a bridge on Route 45 near the village of Millheim is continuing, with a traffic switch scheduled for Wednesday. Once work is complete, PennDOT will be able to remove the bridge from the list of structurally deficient bridges in CentreCounty and provide area drivers with safer, more efficient travel across a modern structure.
Since April 4, the eastbound lane has been closed and temporary traffic signals have enforced an alternating traffic pattern. On Wednesday, traffic will be switched from the westbound lane over to the newly constructed eastbound lane. Replacement work will then begin on the westbound lane. Traffic will still be controlled by temporary traffic signals, as drivers take turns moving across the bridge.
The bridge spans Elk Run, about one mile west of the village of Millheim in PennTownship. The MillheimBridge was built in 1924, is 10 feet long and carries an average of 5,400 vehicles each day.
Work is expected to last through mid-September and includes replacement of the old bridge with a new reinforced box culvert, approach work, paving, guiderail updates, and miscellaneous items. Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of State College is the contractor for this $476,000 job.
Drivers are reminded to obey posted speed limits and always buckle up.
