Obituary Notice: Earl “George” Downer

Earl “George” Downer, 90, of Treasure Lake in DuBois died Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the DuBois Nursing Home. Born Jan. 11, 1923 in Ralphton, he was the son of the late George William Downer and Nora Shields Rafferty Downer.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.  He later served as an Army Reservist in “C” Battery 92nd Artillery until 1966.

On Jan. 6, 1945 at St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, he married Oreta R. Peters.  She survives.

He worked for many years in the family business “Twin Oaks.” He also did swimming pool sales and design for National Pools in Alexandria, VA until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, the George D. Montgomery American Legion Post 17, the James J. Patterson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 813, the Loyal Order of the Ruptured Ducks, the Treasure Lake Lions Club, and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 65 Unknown Soldiers.

He’s survived by four children E. George Downer Jr. and his wife, Carol of DuBois, Oreta Catherine Pierce and her husband, Daniel of Woodbridge, VA, James W. Downer of Wilmington, NC and Ricky F. Downer of Springfield, VA; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his twin, Pearle Null and a step-brother, Lewis McDermott.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Friday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.

A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Richard Siefer as celebrant.

Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard.
