Fire Damages Johnsonburg Residence

JOHNSONBURG – A residence was damaged after a fire ignited at 11:17 a.m. Monday at 502 Second Ave. in Johnsonburg Borough, according to the Ridgway-based state police.

The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal and the Johnsonburg Fire Department investigated the origin and cause of the fire. The fire damaged a two-story, wooden-framed residence that belonged to Carla A. Geer of Johnsonburg.

The fire originated in an exterior wall and spread from near the foundation upward to the attic area. The cause of the fire was accidental in nature, as a nail had previously been driven into an electrical conductor, state police said.

Over time the copper wire melted to the nail and transferred heat into the wooden wall frame. The transfer of heat energy caused the wood to reach its ignition temperature and erupt into flames. Damage was estimated at $75,000, state police said.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The Wilcox and Ridgway fire departments assisted at the scene.
