DUBOIS – DuBois Business College, a sponsor of computer workshops for senior citizens, recently incorporated a safety and security session into the curriculum for students.

Two area guest speakers were invited to address current safety issues with computer use and everyday living safety for seniors. The guest speakers used PowerPoint presentations to present good email practices, computer security awareness, and tips on safely using social networking such as Facebook and Twitter.

Information Technology Specialist, Trish Territo spoke on proper computer security practices and the identification and use of secure Web sites. The audience was additionally made aware of computer viruses/malware, the danger of computer hackers and scammers and how to tell if their computer may be infected by malware.

Online shopping safety was also discussed in depth. Territo advised the students that if an email looks “too good to be true” it probably is. Email such as this can and should be deleted.

Officer Zayne Rhed of the Brockway Area Municipal Police Department was the last guest speaker and he presented material on how to keep your home safe and good security systems. He also presented information on safety away from home and shopping areas, devices you can use to attract attention to keep from being a victim; robbery and burglar safeguards and what to do if you are a victim of fraud.

Rhed encouraged senior citizens to call 911 for assistance when in doubt.
