Robert D. “Smitty” Smith, 70, of Olanta died Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Clearfield Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born June 21, 1942 in Clearfield, he was the son of Charles “Red” and Lucinda (Harvey) Smith.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was employed for Superior Pet, D.C. Guelich Explosives and retired from Penfield Gas, the former PPG utilities and the current UGI gas company after 18 years of service.
He also worked part-time for Kips Bus Service. He was a life member of the Glen Richey Fire Company and a member of the Curwensville Lions Club.
On Sept. 14, 1968 at the Olanta Lutheran Church, he wed Caroline Beckman, who survives along with two children, Sonya Bales and her husband, Cam of Wheatfield, IN and Robert D. Smith Jr. and his wife, Sheila of Grampian.
Also surviving are four granddaughters, Jenna Smith, Amiya Smith, Callie Bales and Jamie Bales, four sisters, Jean Lindy and her husband, James of Reynoldsville, Betty Williams and her husband, Thomas of Reading, Mary Lou Killion and her husband, Earl of Allport and Donna Mann of Osceola Mills.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Smith.
Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville, with Pastor Richard Steuernagle officiating. Burial will follow in the Crown Crest Memorial Park in Hyde.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Glen Richey Fire Company.
