The eastbound sign is located in Boalsburg, east of Somerset Drive. The westbound sign is located in Potters Mills, west of Mountain Back Road. The speed limit in both of these areas is 55 miles per hour.
The speed display sign uses radar to determine the speeds of oncoming traffic. Vehicle speeds are then posted on the lighted section of the sign.
The speed display sign will remain on location for much of the summer.
Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of accidents and fatalities in Pennsylvania. Other aggressive driving behaviors include running stop signs or red lights, passing illegally and tailgating.
Aggressive driving behaviors were listed as an accident cause in more than 57 percent of Centre County accidents in 2012.
This section of U.S. Route 322 received a Dot Tailgating Treatment in 2008. A series of 152 dots was painted on three sections of U.S. Route 322 between Potters Mills and Boalsburg. This treatment is used to help motorists maintain a safe following distance.
